Scentwork is unlike any other area in dog training - our dogs already know how to use their noses, we just have to harness those skills in a more organised manner. There are no rules in scentwork - it doesn't matter if your dog pulls on a lead, barks at other dogs or gets anxious, scentwork is for everyone!
A dog’s main sense is their sense of smell - also known as olfaction. Dogs have approximately 300 million olfactory receptors compared to a human’s 6 million so it makes sense that we utilise that exceptional sense of smell to our advantage. This is what makes dogs great for use with tracking teams, search & rescue, drug detection, medical detection and weapon detection.
Scentwork is suitable for all ages, breeds and abilities and has great benefits to the dog itself including general enrichment, promoting calmness, mental exercise and alleviating boredom. It is a great way to bond with your dog as it’s an activity that both the handler and dog can enjoy together.
